Understanding Low Vision
A person is described as having low vision when he or she experiences a significant loss of vision (20/70 or worse) that is not correctable with glasses or contacts. Low vision can make familiar tasks like reading, driving, paying bills, cooking watching television and even recognizing loved ones faces…difficult. There is no cure for low vision. However, it is treatable with rehabilitation and the use of devices such as magnifiers, special glasses, large print reading materials and communication aids.
What Causes Low Vision
Most people develop low vision as a result of an eye disease such as glaucoma, diabetes, retinal detachment, stroke or macular degeneration. Although low vision primarily affects the elderly, it can occur at any stage of life.
